Chinese structure:

Facts about the typical chinese architecture:

·   based on the principle of balance and symmetry

·   main structure is the axis

·   secondary structures as two wings

·   reflects Chinese social and ethnical values

·   in the past each city had their own unique personalities and were surrounded by a strong, high walls

·   concepts from feng shui and mythic concepts

·   use of certain colours, numbers and the cardinal directions in traditional Chinese architecture

·   Beijing remains the best example of traditional Chinese town planning

 

 

China’s cities

Shanghai: It is the largest city in China and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade.

It has a rich collection of buildings and structures of various architectural styles. The Pudong district has a lot of supertall skyscrapers (eg.: the Shanghai World Financial Center, which is the second highest (492m) skyscraper in the world).

 

Beijing: It is the second largest city and the capital of China. There are three styles of architecture.

 

Hong Kong: Is known for its expansive skyline and natural settings. Hong Kong is one of the worlds leading financial capitals. It has the world’s greatest number of skyscrapers. Hong Kong is a centre of modern architecture. The tallest building is the international finance centre.

1.       The Commune, Beijing: First phase completed 2002, expansion scheduled for completion in 2010

The world’s highest buildings

In China there are two buildings which are in the top 10 of the highest buildings in the world.

·   Taipei 101 Tower: located in Taipei, Taiwan (height: 509 m)

·   Shanghai World Financial Center: located in Shanghai (height: 492)

(The highest building in the world will be (in 2009) the  Burj Dubai, in Dubai (height: 705–950m))
